Navigating Infertility During the Holiday Season

As the year’s drawing to a close, the decorations are up, and people are gathering and exchanging gifts. But if you and your partner are experiencing difficulties in conceiving, you may not be in such a celebratory mood. Many people going through fertility care can have mixed feelings about the holidays. Remember, though, this is the season of giving, making it the perfect time to think about how you can give back to yourself and take part in some much-needed self-care.

The Importance of Self-Care for Infertility

If you’ve encountered obstacles on your fertility journey, the additional social obligations placed on you at this time of year can increase your emotional and physical burden. However, certain coping skills may help to preserve your overall health, and avoid potentially uncomfortable situations. Plus, you’ll be in a better headspace when you return to your fertility treatment.

Confide In Those Closest To You

When people feel stressed, they sometimes shrink away from those who are closest to them. This is very understandable as being vulnerable can sometimes be challenging. That being said, it can also be immensely rewarding to embrace the holiday spirit and share your story with the loved ones you trust the most. It’s important to have emotional support, especially at this time of the year. Being around family, friends, or anyone close to you may help you feel better, and you may even grow closer as you share your feelings. This may even be a good time to do something special or travel with those close to you.

Look Beyond Your Situation

Doing things for others in your community not only helps those in need, but it can also help distract you from your own stressors. For example, you may decide to donate to food banks or charities or volunteer in a hospital or nursing home.

Beyond charitable actions, you may find it therapeutic to spend time with others experiencing your issues. By joining an online or in-person support group, you can connect with other like-minded individuals and couples.
